



Last week, our Healthcare and Life Sciences Club at POLIMI Graduate School of Management had the pleasure of visiting the Bayer HealthCare Manufacturing S.r.l. site in Garbagnate. It was a full-immersion day: we explored their AI implementation initiatives across the supply chain and toured the production areas and warehouse.
A holistic approach to AI in operations
It was genuinely inspiring to see how AI is being put to work in drug product manufacturing, quality control, quality assurance, and logistics โ not as a bolt-on technology, but as a real driver of efficiency, better decision-making, and stronger process reliability.
What stood out most was the holistic mindset behind it: AI wasn’t treated as a standalone capability to showcase, but as a core enabler of operational excellence and continuous improvement woven across functions โ from production planning to QA tasks and processes, all the way through the batch release pathway.
Disciplined, guardrail-aware AI adoption
Equally valuable was seeing AI applied in such a disciplined and thoughtful way. Real consideration was given to the guardrails needed to address the lack of transparency that still represents one of GenAI’s key weaknesses. The Bayer team showed a sensible, grounded approach to anticipating the constraints likely to come from pharma authorities, clearly informed by experience across international regulatory contexts.
This is the kind of adoption pattern that regulated industries need more of: ambitious enough to capture real value from AI, but disciplined enough to respect the transparency and traceability requirements that pharma manufacturing demands.
