New report explains how 5G will transform Wearable Devices and the Healthcare industry

In a report titled “The 5G Business Potential,” networking and Telecommunications Company Ericsson has found wearable devices and artificial intelligence will improve resource efficiency and meet consumer demands for greater convenience and freedom of choice in the healthcare sector.

The report analyzed the 5G business opportunity that comes from industrial digitalization in eight key global industries. According to the report, there’s a US $76 billion revenue opportunity in 2026 for operators addressing healthcare transformation with 5G.

IoT - PolimiThe conference, organized by the School of Management of Politecnico (April the 21st, 2017), was the last of a huge number of meetings related to the IoT, which is becoming the key point of the entire digital revolution: this is not only a new technology but is putting in place the basis of the new world, with new rules, new way of working, from servicing to manufacturing.

What is it?
The Internet of things (IoT) is the inter-networking of physical devices like vehicles, buildings and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data. (Wikipedia)

Why?
The speakers were extremely clear: process optimization. If you adopt this technology in a proper way on industry, healthcare, commodities and public services, you could easily understand the impact in terms of‘product capabilities improvement’ which could be sophisticated predictability, better quality of product or service, continuous changes to be aligned within the customer needs which are considered sometimes a moving target.

Infrastructure, technology, business?
The main driver of this change could be listed in business as the brain, technology as the medium and the infrastructure as supportive.

Business is fundamentally exploring new opportunities, start up for any kind of applications, consolidated players to expanding their portfolio, healthcare and insurance companies to offer a better fitted coverage services.

For the technology consider that Huawey already budget thousands of dollars of investment into the IoT tech development, 45% of the workforce is part of the R&D dept., this is an incredible critical mass. The experts present by the meeting referred the presence of the big community of developers already engaged in many projects.

The infrastructure plays a big game, connectivity based on the main architectures (like Ingenu, Sigfox, LoRa, Weithless) which are hosted partially on entirely by the big telecom firms, the way for the meantime is not clear, but sooner or later the end point could be 5G as the future definitive protocol for the data transmission: some companies put together their own R&D competence center on the 5G technology.

Applications?
° Smart city – managing in smarter way the public parking areas, road lighting management, payments systems and mobility
° Smart car – all the applications which assists the driver (like automatic emergency stop) to have the final arrival of the full automated driving
° Smart building – in order to save energy within the heating / cooling system, internal lighting, access grant automated
° Smart logistic – smart tracking of goods, for example via RFID, so to manage automatically the ‘pick and pack’ process in warehouses and to detect in real time the geolocalization
° Smart metering – measure continuously any flows for water, gas, electricity any kind of other commodity in which is necessary to detect big number of data
° Industrial – detectors to identify measure during the production lifecycle, the applications could be multiple the big revolution is to have direct communication machine-to-machine to coordinate the production
